Desta - adopted   Queenie - adopted
March 5, 2006

At 3 months old this puppy found herself at Monterey Animal Control as a stray.

This cutie didn't wait long before someone paid her adoption fee.

When she was spayed they found that she had a heart murmur and the adopters changed their minds.

Rescued from Merced Animal Control at 8 weeks old, She screamed in fear as I picked her up from the corner of the kennel where she was hiding.

She had a severely infected eye from a foxtail. The vet recommended she be put down, because her eye would need to be removed. I take her home & give her eye a chance.

We paid the adoption fee and brought her to our rescue.

She seems healthy.

She's a friendly, happy puppy.

She plays with her ball & chew toys.

Our vet examines her and says she has a pronounced heart murmur. There's no chance that she'll outgrow it. On a scale from 1-6 with 6 being the worst, she's a 3 or 4.

He refers us to a cardiologist for further testing.

2 weeks later her eye has healed remarkably! We've been hand feeding her, so she's starting to trust us. Unfortunately, she showing signs of parvo. Luckily, she never gets severely sick, and recovers with home care and antibiotics.

She's finally healthy & playful. Now to find her a good home, indoors with a loving family.

Sept 6th

She injured her back leg while playing. X-rays reveal severe hip dysplasia. If her leg heals & she shows no signs of pain, we can find her a home.

Good News!!

Desta has a mid-range heart murmur. If it doesn't get any worse, which my vet thinks will be the case, she will live a long normal life. To know for sure, she will need to be rechecked (about $200) in 6 months to evaluate the progression, then periodically throughout her life to monitor it.

If it does get worse there isn't a lot they can do.  She will tire easily as she gets older and will eventually pass away of congestive heart failure.

She sleeps in a crate at night and is working on housebreaking and other house manners.
